The Tea Polyphenols Market Is Set to Grow by 5.5+ Percent Through 2028

The rise in tea consumption rates and the growing awareness regarding tea’s health benefits will likely increase the tea polyphenols market share over the span of 2022-2028, according to Global Market Insights.

One of the most popular beverages, tea is extensively used as a dietary supplement due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic properties.

The polyphenols present in tea leaves boast of high epigallocatechin gallate, and antioxidants and fibers that enhance metabolism and support weight reduction. The numerous advantages of polyphenols have also opened new opportunities for tea polyphenols market players, while making way for increased green tea cultivation and consumption.

Benefits of Green Tea Attract More Consumers

The awareness regarding the health benefits of green tea has become more mainstream now. Various studies have suggested that consuming significant amounts of green tea may positively help with weight loss, affect skin health and quality, and alleviate the risks of cardiovascular diseases. The benefits associated with green tea consumption for weight loss and obesity have also been ratified by some of the recently published studies.

In one such interventional study that was conducted on 35 subjects with obesity and metabolic equivalents, patients were randomly assigned to green tea extract, green tea and a control group for eight weeks. As per the findings of the study, it was revealed that green tea extract and green tea consumption significantly decreased the body weight and body mass index compared to controls at eight weeks. These results also indicated the therapeutic effects of green tea polyphenols or green catechins in improving metabolic equivalents in obese patients.

It's important to note that nearly 600,000 tons of green tea are consumed every year globally, out of which 50 percent of consumption comes from the Chinese subcontinent, while nearly 80,000 tons of green tea is being consumed in Japan alone annually.

Given its umpteen benefits and the brewing competition, green tea makers are putting forward their best foot to launch new products enriched with medicinal and herbal properties. For instance, India’s leading natural health care and ayurvedic company – Dabur India Limited – introduced Dabur Vedic Tea portfolio with the revelation of Dabur Vedic Green Detox Kahwa. The gluten-free product supports weight loss, detoxification, boosting metabolism and improvement in digestion. Company officials say that the novel product could also help consumers have another health-conscious choice in the beverage space.

Overall, the market value of green tea polyphenols is projected to expand considerably in the coming years, registering a CAGR of more than 5.5 percent through 2028.

Tea Polyphenols in Cosmetics Gain Favor Worldwide

Consumers have become increasingly focused on their skincare in recent years, given the changing beauty trends. This has enabled them to opt for more natural solutions for enhancing skin texture and quality. Among these is the growing use of black tea. Black tea polyphenols possess a high concentration of minerals, vitamins and essential oils that contribute toward the antioxidant properties in black tea skin care products. The product has long been recognized to offer soothing properties that relieve skin discomfort.

Some of the prominent benefits offered by black tea polyphenols include reduction in pigmentation caused by harmful UV rays, preventing early aging and removing blemishes.

Introduction to New Policies and Tea Plantation Technologies in Asia

Unsurprisingly, China currently tops the leaderboard in tea cultivation and consumption, accounting for about 40 percent of the world’s tea consumption, weighing in at 2.4 million tons. This growth can be attributed to the growing sustainable and technological practices in the tea plantation across China. In Yunnan, smallholder farmers applying agroecological practices to tea cultivation have observed phenomenal results in form of lower management costs, increased biodiversity and better-tasting tea.

Moreover, scientists and tea farmers in the region have witnessed a paradigm shift toward more sustainable farming practices over the last half a decade. Unilever, in 2017, signed a letter of intent for cooperation in a sustainable tea plantation project with Zunyi city government in Guizhou province. The project involves the food, home care and personal care behemoth to support the local tea industry and reach a wider clientele from both home and abroad. The main objective behind this was to develop a sustainable tea garden of up to 6,667 hectares by the end of 2020.

Meanwhile, India is also upping its game in the tea plantation industry, which can be credited to the introduction of tea export schemes and policies in the country. For instance, the tea industry in India is looking forward to the proposed Tea Promotion and Development Act of 2022 in the ensuing year. The budget would introduce new objectives so that the country’s tea board can act as a facilitator for optimizing promotion, research and development in the tea industry.

According to IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation), India’s total tea exports stood at around 201 million kg during 2021-2022. It is important to note that the majority of tea exported out of India is black tea, which accounts for about 96 percent of the overall exports. This makes the country a prominent region for the growth of tea polyphenols market through 2028.

As a dietary source of biologically nourishing compounds that help alleviate a wide range of diseases, health tea is foreseeing an upward trend in 2022 and beyond worldwide. Tea polyphenols contain antioxidants, bioactive compounds, essential nutrients and ECG (epicatechin gallate) to help enhance immunity, boost metabolism and keep the mind calm. Empowered by developments in tea cultivation technologies and supportive government regulations, the tea polyphenols market share is anticipated to surpass US$400 million by 2028 end.

Europe – The Emerging Market

Europe, given the growing cancer cases, is also emerging as a hub for tea polyphenols. Driven by the high obesity rate, cardiovascular disease prevalence, and a large geriatric patient pool, Europe is projected to account for a market valuation of US$95 million in 2028.
