For the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage this year, Oliver Pluff & Company – based in Charleston, S.C. – is honoring women everywhere with a limited edition tin that’s filled with one of the company’s favorite teas: English Breakfast. The label design was inspired by the program cover from the March 3, 1913, suffrage march, where 5,000 women protested for the right to vote.
August 18, 2020, officially marked 100 years since the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The amendment granted women nationwide the right to vote and followed a century of protest and social action.
Ten percent of all proceeds of the commemorative tea tins from Oliver Pluff & Company will go directly to the Women’s Right National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y.
According to Darren Hartford, owner of Oliver Pluff & Company, his business wanted to honor those women who changed their world through grit and determination and perseverance. “It took almost 80 years for the organized Women’s suffrage movement to change the constitution," he says. "It's not the story of one person, it is story of an idea that was bigger than any one person and a vision that lasted generations – much like the vision the founding fathers had about the potential of our form of government and its potential to change the world.”
Hartford says he didn’t know more than the basic story of women’s suffrage when he started, and he feels like he has only scratched the surface in discovering more about the history. “It’s a story that we as a country need to tell and explore.”
How did this idea come about? “We were helping the Women’s Right National Historical Park design a custom tin when we came up with the idea of this commemorative tin,” explains Hartford.
As to the design, Hartford says it’s much more colorful than their signature tin line, but the limited edition tin really needed to share the history and the story of the suffrage movement.
The tins are available now and they’re filled with either loose-leaf tea or teabags. The loose-leaf tins can be found here, and the teabag tins are online here.
