Two million Tassimo Tea & Coffee Brewers Recalled

WASHINGTON, D.C.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission ordered the recall of more than a million Tassimo single-cup brewers following 140 incidents since December in which the machines sprayed boiling liquid, tea leaves and coffee grounds onto users.

In one instance, a 10-year-old Minnesota girl received second-degree burns to her face and neck that required hospitalization and a 2-year-old Canadian girl who suffered facial burns. The commission recorded 37 second-degree burns, 18 in Canada with 21 separate complaints involving ruptured “T-discs.”

ImageCPSC cautioned the brewing machine’s T-disc holding the coffee or tea can burst. The recall includes 835,000 machines with the Bosch or Tassimo Professional brand name sold in the United States and 900,000 in Canada. Sixty-one of the 140 reports were from Canada where the government has ordered a recall.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Tassimo brewers and contact the firm to order a free replacement T Disc holder for the brewing mechanism. BSH Home Appliances Corp. manufacturers the Tassimo equipment and Kraft makes the discs. The Bosch branded equipment was assembled in Slovania and China.

The discs include Tassimo Gevalia espresso and cappuccino and Tassimo Nabob espresso, latte and cappuccino. Only espresso T Discs from the drinks listed above, with code information ending between 11213 and 12020 are included in the recall.

The appliances were sold at department, mass merchandise and home improvement stores nationwide and on various websites, including www.tassimodirect.com, from June 2008 through February 2012 for between $100 and $250. The Tassimo Professional model was sold directly to hotels and food service providers and they are being contacted directly.

The Bosch-brand brewers were sold in black, white, anthracite, gray, silver, red, titanium and white/gray colors. The Tassimo Professional brewers were only sold in black.
