As The Hindu reports, The Wagh Bakhri Tea (WBT) Group, in an attempt to source high-quality tea, will soon acquire tea gardens in eastern India.
Founded in 1919, WBT is an extremely popular supplier in India and has a 10 per cent share of the all-India market for packaged teas.
Piyush Desai, the Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat Tea Processors & Packers Ltd, owners of WBT, noted that tea consumers in India often miss out on the quality tea produced in their country because of heavy exporting volumes. Only small amounts of Indian tea are sold domestically. Desai also commented that his company frequently imports tea from Kenya and Sri Lanka.
Desai said the company is specifically interested in purchasing a tea group comprised of 4-6 gardens and a minimum production quantity of three million kg in the first phase.
“The gardens will have to be either in Assam or in West Bengal from where we source 80 per cent of our teas,” Mr. Desai stated.
Desai also indicated that though WBT plans to address the consumer demand for organic tea, there is an overall lack of organic tea producers in India.
