Green Tea Through the Skin? Print E-mail
Wednesday, 15 October 2008
San Diego-based SoutherLee, a novelty products company, has launched tea bracelets, claiming they "are made out of green tea, which absorbs into your skin and body for health benefits."

A press statement added, "Independently tested, the patent pending technology allows the green tea to absorb into your skin and body through a process called transdermal absorption. The bracelets should be worn for eight to twelve days before the green tea is completely absorbed."

At least one researcher expressed doubt about the claim. Paul Holmgren, PhD, of Dr. Paul's School of Tea & Health said he had not seen the Zenlet, but his past work had taught him that the way the human body absorbs catechins and theanine (the beneficial elements of green tea) is much more complicated than the product statement suggests.

“I just don’t see how these substances would get into the blood stream and be of benefit to the bracelet wearer,” he said.

David Jensen, CEO of SoutherLee, said, "The best way to get the health benefits from green tea is still to drink green tea, but our Zenlet Green Tea Bracelets are fun, attractive to wear and provide a continuous dose of green tea."
