Missoula, Mont.-based Tipu's Tiger Chai voluntarily recalled its Chai Concentrate on June 17.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted the recall on its Web site Tuesday. At press time, the Tipu's Tiger Web site was down. A records audit found that the Chai Concentrate had unacceptably high pH levels according to FDA standards. The recall announcement stated that it "has the potential to be contaminated with clostridium botulinum," the bacteria that causes botulism, a potentially fatal illness. The company distributed the potentially tainted Chai mainly to stores and coffee kiosks in western Montana, as well as a cafe in Prescott, Ariz. It is in 1.89-liter units and bears date stamps from Sept. 23, 2009, to May 22, 2010. No illnesses related to the recall had been reported at press time. Consumers with questions should call (888) 506-2424.
