The Berlin-based Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has released a report, "New Human Data on the Assessment of Energy Drinks," calling attention to the health risks it says these high-caffeine beverages pose. The Institute, which goes by the acronym BfR (after its German name), completed its first study of highly caffeinated drinks in March 2002. The most recent report results from an in-depth examination of studies conducted by Sweden's Nat'l. Food Administration, of cardiovascular research presented at the 2007 American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions and of other case studies. BfR concludes that it "reiterates its earlier recommendation of providing detailed information on the product labels (of energy drinks). Furthermore, BfR advises consumers with high blood pressure and heart disease to show restraint when consuming energy drinks until robust studies are available." The full report is available at BfR's Web site.
