In conjunction with the
2006 World Tea Expo being held March 27-29 at
the Las Vegas Hilton, a modern version of a
traditional tea auction will occur featuring
Nilgiri tea from India. A diversity of black,
green, organic, white and other types will be
part of this auction event. Potential buyers
will get a chance to see and cup the teas prior
to the auction.

Weekdays at the University
of Michigan’s Clements Library a 10:00 am
mandatory daily tea break unites staff and
visitors for a short respite that brings
everyone together for conversation and
refreshment. The library serves no coffee on the
breaks and all newcomers are encouraged to stop
reading and enjoy a few minutes of tea
time.

related holdings of James Finlay Limited have
been acquired by local buyers in Bangladesh. The
move is a sizeable one for local entrepreneurs
who purchased 17 tea gardens under the
agreement.

business selling loose teas – primarily Indian
varieties – and brewed tea. The new venture also
merchandises a variety of gifts, and the shop
also hosts a variety of social and community
events.

In spite of fears that coffee has invaded the
land of the leaf with commercial gusto,
contemporary style tea houses are becoming more
popular in China’s biggest cities. Many of those
operations are catering to businessmen and
middle-class people seeking a place to unwind
and refresh. Estimates are as high as 50,000
units nationwide with sales well over $1 billion
annually.

Research pioneered by the
state-managed Tea Research Association in India
has invented a biscuit that taste like tea. Even
better, the new food contains polyphenols, but
caffeine will be omitted. What’s next, Tea
Jam?

| Iced Tea Sales Booming in
Bulgaria |

For reasons that are not
entirely clear, sales of iced tea in Bulgaria
are going through the roof with a 130% increase
taking the category to the top of light drinks
in 2005. Other non-alcohol beverages are also on
the rise in Bulgaria suggesting major
consumption patterns are shifting.

Perhaps to combat the burgeoning popularity
of soda competitors, the beverage giant
Coca-Cola may be getting ready to roll out new
coffee and tea products. Sobered by sluggish
2006 sales, and also noting the continuing boom
in specialty coffee industry growth, the
beverage conglomerate is assessing all of it
options.
