Austin, Texas Sweet Leaf
Tea Co. has raised another round of capital to
further its business development and growth. The
latest round of financing was approximately
$750,000 and will be used to fund new sales
representatives and operations.

Upward Into Mainstream US

Three years after the U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s implementation of
the National Organic Program mandating strict
criteria for sale and labeling of certified
organic foods and beverages, sales are booming.
Over half of Americans have now tried organic
consumables, and polls indicate positive, upward
consumption trends.

Perhaps following the lead
of India’s Tata conglomerate who recently
acquired California based Good Earth Teas,
Indian tea company Girnar Tea is scouting the
U.S. market for business opportunities. Girnar
is reportedly assessing joint venture partners
to assist marketing of its products and possibly
expand production.

Credible scientific
research suggests that tea and extracts made
from Camellia (tea) may indeed decrease the
power of flu viruses to replicate. This
promising research theorizes that the
antioxidant polyphenols found in tea may also
destroy the organisms that cause flu, strep
throat and other illnesses.

| Indian Tea Parlors Being
Launched to Woo

In an effort to offset part of the continuing
over- supply production output of its teas, the
Tea Board (Coonoor – India) and various private
entities are roiling out snappy new tea parlors
to help boost consumption with local consumers
and tourists. Initial promotions will be set up
in the Nilgiri region and besides serving teas,
the new outlets will also sell various ‘luxury
teas’ to customers.

(Nutritional ingredients producer Cognis has
announced the availability of two new
standardized botanical extracts created to boost
the antioxidant potency of various foods and
beverages. The new honeybush and rooibos
extracts contain no caffeine, little tannin and
are rich in healthy antioxidants, making them
ideal for fortification of ready-to-drink (RTD)
beverages and other consumer products according
to the manufacturer.

Tea producers in India’s
Assam and Darjeeling regions are planning to
leverage the romantic and exotic aspects of
their estates by turning them into world class
destinations. The program is designed to add
another revenue source to the various operations
by leveraging existing resources, including
bungalows, native foods and obviously tours of
the tea growing operations.

Heinz India has announced plans to distribute
MJF Teas Ltd. (Sri Lanka) “Dilmah” brand within
the country. The line of teas will include
bagged, loose and even a product developed
specifically for the Indian market.

Northern Virginia chapter
members of the international women’s Red Hat
organization have sent a holiday gift package to
American service women serving in Afghnaistan.
The special morale boosting package includes
various teas, brewing accoutrements and the
groups legendary Red Hats.

| World Tea Super-Producer
Export Race Steams Ahead |

Kenya and Sri Lanka appear to be continuing
their recent history of neck-and-neck
productivity specific to export of their teas to
world markets. While Kenya surpassed Sri Lanka
in 2004 for total exports, Sri Lanka reportedly
had a very brisk 2005 export year, once again
surpassing their arch-rival Kenya based on
statistics gathered through the end of September
2005.
